The voice to be heard through Jukola relay is known to many former competitors and visitors. Antti Örn, is by the microphone now for the third time. Professional comments are to be expected; Antti has participated Jukola relay himself since 1984 and works at the moment as a coach at the Finnish Orienteering Federation.
Jukola is a special event from commentator’s point of view, already due to its duration: Venla and Jukola relays after each other demand the commentator to work all day and all night – straight!
– Luckily I am not working alone. I have a great team around me which makes it so much easier to handle the long duration of the event. Also, litres and litres of coffee is needed to get through the night. On the other hand, for a passionate orienteer the work is very interesting. I hope that I can pass on my own enthusiasm to the public, Antti says.
The expertise is in order but every event is of its own nature and demands prior work. The teams are in focus and there are a lot of them participating. The commentator needs to have up-to-date knowledge about their compositions and conditions. Also the recreational teams need to be noticed. All that means that Antti’s preparation for Jukola takes all year.
– Jukola is a well-organised competition with an atmosphere of a summer festival. You meet old friends there and make a lot of new ones. I hope that commentator team is able once again to do its part in supporting the warm atmosphere and also make sure that the public is on the map of what is happening, says Antti.
