Middle Finland is like mini Finland, praises Jukola’s patron

Jukola relay’s patron and YLE’s executive director Lauri Kivinen runs the fifth leg of Suunta-Jurva’s third team.

 – This is our ninth time in Jukola. There are people from my home area and also media people, Kivinen tells.

And because he gets to orienteer he wanted to honor the patron’s robe and didn’t go to the trip to the competition terrain that was arranged for the invitees. So his knowledge about the terrain is based only to his past experiences of Middle Finland.

I went to high school in Jyväskylä and I have both orienteered and been in forest skill competitions in forests. The terrain is beautiful and all terrain types can be found here. It’s like Finland in a smaller size, he praises.

My expectations are that the terrain is diverse but not mean, a place where it would be easy to orienteer, he says.

Kivinen says that orienteering is a good way to keep up physical condition. He is going to challenge himself this summer in another top sport event, in triathlon in Joroinen.

– I was already there last summer. The popularity of triathlon is on the rise like the popularity of orienteering and I don’t wonder why – it’s a really diverse sports.
