Lauri Kivinen, the CEO of YLE has been invited to be the guardian of the Jukola and Venla Relay held in Jämsä next June.

The invitation was proposed with the spirit of Aleksis Kivi by a group of seven people, which was composed by representatives from the competition organisation, Kaukametsäläiset Ry and the Finnish Orienteering Federation.

– The years long radio and television cooperation in the Jukola relays gave us a good foundation to choose the guardian. The CEO’s strong orientation to the sport thourgh several experiences from Jukola , and his background in the Central Finland and Ylä-Pirkanmaa were also a natural foundation to propose the invitation, says Jaakko Lajunen, the Competition Manager of Jämsä-Jukola.

– The long traditions of transmitting the Jukola Relay go back to the 1960s and 1970s. The first live broadcasts were filmed then. During the events in previous years the 13 hour live broadcasts both in radion and on television have been possible mainly throuhg the exellent cooperation with the competition organisers. For YLE it is great to transmit orienteering and I am taken aback by being invited to the respected post of the guardian, rejoices the CEO Lauri Kivinen.

Orienteering has been familiar to him since his teens. – Forests of Central Finland became familiar in the 70s through the scout camps and competitions when I lived in Jyväskylä. Then we mainly orienteered with a ragged and wet photocopy map, recalls Lauri Kivinen. – The orienteering evenings I found in the capital area in the 90s and by the inspiration gathered there I have taken part in the Fin5 event for three times and in the Jukola Relay for seven times. The attraction of Jukola is to run the same tracks with the world’s best, but at the same time it’s a uniquely brisk event, which gathers the orienteering people together for one light early summer weekend, says Lauri Kivinen. Kivinen will also take part in the Jämsä-Jukola in the Suunta Jurva team.
