Janne Salmi has run the anchor leg of the winning team three times and had the honour of reading the message of the Jukola relay.
– It is one of the most important moments in my life, comments Salmi who is working as an YLE commentator at Kuopio-Jukola. I had read many books on orienteering history and in my opinion Jukola was the most impressive.
Reading the message in front of thousands is an incomparable experience.
– An unbelievable outburst of emotions which is made up of the culture and history of Jukola together with achieving your goal with friends you have run with since childhood.
– Jukola used to be the only orienteering competition on television. Reading the message was the greatest honour possible for an orienteer.
Salmi has no memory of the contents of the three messages he read – time has passed and emotions were running high each time.
– Hearing the message always brings tears to my eyes. It is such an emotional moment as there is so much history involved.
