Six years of preparation culminated with the official opening of the Kuopio-Jukola relay. The opening ceremony was held at 13.00, an hour before the start of the Venla relay.

At the start of the ceremony, the Jukola flag was raised alongside the Finnish and European Union flags.

The competition manager Jouko Kaihua wished the orienteering community a very warm welcome and reminded everyone that the orienteers would be racing on terrain never used in competition before. Also, the massive infrastructure required for the competition had been built from nothing.

According to Kaihua, approximately 1800 people are involved in the organization of the event.
