The message of this year’s Jukola relay was received by Mervi Vidgrén, the Rector of Savonia University of Applied Sciences, and Jukka Mönkkönen, the Academic Rector of the University of Eastern Finland.
Aleksis Kivi wrote about the seven brothers of Jukola in an era, when health care consisted mainly of sauna, hard liquor and tar.
As the oldest brother Juhani pointed out: “Isn´t it only right and just that a man should feed his carcase. On this trip we shall often enough be treading bogs and squelching quagmires, and spending our nights wet through on beds of bear-moss. At such times a little gulp from a pocket-flask can do good, think I.”
Hence, we have been willing to carry this message on the island of Soisalo, around the forests of Vehmersalmi, covered with tussocks, to direct our message to the University of Eastern Finland and the other educational institutions in Kuopio that have significatly contributed to the health, well-being and nutrition education in Finland.
