In addition to the colourful sea of tents, an impressive collection of club banners flutter in the wind in the tent area. Nobody can remember where or when this tradition of using large colourful team banners started. Nowadays, a colourful banner is a must for all self-respecting teams.
The banners can be useful signposts for exhausted orienteers trying to find their way back to their tents. They also make it easier to find friends from other teams. Teams without their own banners can make use of other teams’ banners by giving instructions such as “Our tent is third tent to the south from team X’s banner”.
Many clubs and groups will prepare for next year’s Jukola event by acquiring a banner for their team.
