The Jukola Relay is the world\u2019s largest orienteering relay, held annually in Finland since 1949. It features teams navigating through forests by map and compass, with the men\u2019s race run overnight and the women\u2019s Venla Relay held during the day. The event draws almost 20 000 competitors and celebrates Finnish nature, endurance, and teamwork.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the most exotic teams in Jukola this year can be Nerima OLC, a team from Japan. They have about 60 members in team, mainly from Tokyo. In this interview, Yuki Nitami<\/strong>, who will represent Japan at the 2025 WOC, tells interesting facts about their team preparations. <\/p>\n

\u201cOrienteering in Japan has traditionally been centered around university club activities, with a history of nearly 50 years. But recently, greater emphasis is now placed on the Japan Orienteering Championships, supported by the introduction of a national ranking system for each age groups and elite athletes. Thanks to the passionate working group, the Japanese orienteering community is becoming more familiar for people with wider interests and ages.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are there some big orienteering events organized in Japan? <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest one is CC7, Club Cup Seven-people Relay, just like Jukola! However, most training is done individually.”<\/p>\n

What are typical terrains like in Japanese competitions compared to Finnish terrain? <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cJapanese terrains are often very steep and complex, with a dense network of ridges and re-entrants shaped by heavy rainfall over time. One example is the area that was ranked 2nd in the \u201cCourse of the Year 2023\u201d \u2014 a great representation of Japan\u2019s technical terrain! Maps World of O<\/a><\/p>\n

The terrains at the foot of Mt. Fuji \u2014 where the World Cup was held in 2000 \u2014 are another iconic example of unique landscapes, characterized by volcanic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are there specific training challenges or advantages you face in Japan?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Definitely.
\n\u2460 In Japan, good orienteering maps and terrain are limited and often located far from cities, so just getting to training areas can be time-consuming and expensive. We also don\u2019t have as many competitions as in Europe, so gaining race experience often requires traveling long distances.
\n\u2461 Summers are extremely hot and humid, which makes forest training tough\u2014and sometimes even risky due to wildlife like snakes, hornets or occasionally bears.
\n\u2462 On the other hand, we can train outdoors year-round in most parts of the country.<\/p>\n

Is this your first time participating in Jukola?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, this is our first time participating in Jukola. We have heard that Jukola is one of the biggest orienteering event in the world, and that the event is really entertaining, everyone talking a role in the all-night-long race. We had always wanted to take part in Jukola and we\u2019re so happy to finally participate in this great event. We\u2019re actually surprised ourselves that so many asked to join, and that we can form two teams instead of one.<\/p>\n

What are your goals or hopes for your run and your team in this year’s Jukola? <\/strong><\/p>\n

This is our first Jukola, so our main goal is simply to enjoy the race and make it to the finish\u2014both individually and as a team. There are two teams from Japan this year, so of course we\u2019re hoping to finish ahead of the other one!<\/p>\n

Have you done any night orienteering in Japan or Finland to prepare for the night legs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, of course!! At the foot of Mt. Fuji, some of our members have organized and run several training camps for Jukola, including night orienteering. We are very well prepared and looking forward to running in Finnish forest!<\/p>\n
