The Youth Jukola is a 7-leg international youth orienteering competition. Teams must consist of boys and girls of different ages.

Legs, age- and skill level requirements and preliminary leg distances

1st leg: D16 (born 2008–), skill level 14, 5,1 km

2nd leg: H/D16 (born 2008–), skill level 14, 5,8 km

3rd leg: H/D14 (born 2010–), skill level 10, 2,7 km

4th leg: D14 (born 2010–), skill level 12, 3,9 km

5th leg: H/D14 (born 2010–), skill level 12, 4,0 km

6th leg: D18 (b. 2006–), skill level 16, 5,6 km

7th leg: H/D18 (born 2006–), skill level 16, 6,9 km

Total 34,0 km

Leg distances include approximately 520 m of marked route. All legs except leg 3 include forking. 

Start & Finish

Relay mass start is at 11:00. The winning team is expected to arrive at the finish at about 14:00.

Competition rules

The competition rules of the Finnish Orienteering Federation (Suomen Suunnistusliitto) and the instructions of the organizer must be followed. Spiked shoes are forbidden on all legs. Shoes with studs are allowed.

Eligibility to Participate

The teams should mainly be formed from the members of one orienteering club. Combined teams may be formed if a club otherwise cannot find enough competitors to form a team or a club has more young competitors than they can fit into their own teams. A team may also be formed from schools or youth organizations of the same county. If an orienteering club member wants to participate in a team of a school or youth organization, permission from the orienteering club is required. Leg-specific age and gender requirements apply to all teams.

No Finnish Orienteering Federation license or insurance are required to participate. Participation is at the competitor’s own risk.

The organizer forms combined teams of the orienteers who have listed themselves in the Orienteer Bank. The competitors of such teams will be charged a registration fee of €20/person.

Registration

Registration for the Youth Jukola will open on Monday 17/6/2024 and close on Friday 2/8/2024 at 23:59 EET (GMT+2). A link to the online registration portal will be published on the competition website. The participation fee is €140 /team. Fees are paid online directly on the registration portal. Foreign teams will be charged a bank service fee for currency exchange.

Late Registration

Late registrations can be made in the registration portal until Sunday 11/8/2024 23:59 EET. The fee for late registrations is €190 /team. The method of payment is the same as in normal registration.

Running Order

The team’s final running order needs to be submitted by Friday, 16.8.2024 at 14:00 through the online registration portal.

If this is not possible, the running order has to be submitted in written from to the info stand manager. After this, well justified changes to the running order may be submitted to the info stand in written form by 10:00 on the competition day. Any proposed changes are reviewed and accepted or rejected by the competition’s Technical Advisor.

A team that does not submit their running order according to these instructions may not start. A team running in any other than the submitted order will be disqualified.

Competition Cards and Punching System

In this competition the Emit punching system will be used. A team must have at least three Emit Cards. A single Emit Card may not be used in two different teams or on consecutive legs in the same team.

Emit Cards may be rented from the organizer for € 5 /card. The number of rental cards needed must be indicated at registration. The Emit cards’ serial numbers do not need to be reported in advance: these will be noted in the results database when entering the start- or changeover pens.

GPS Tracking

Top teams will carry GPS tracking devices on legs 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 ja 7. Refusal to carry a tracking device will lead to disqualification.  The use of screen-equipped GPS devices in competition is forbidden.

Awards

The 15 best club teams will be awarded Youth Jukola medals. Honorary awards will be given to the seven best club teams also. The winning team will get a trophy for one year and a miniature model of it for good. The best combined team will also be awarded.

Embargoed Areas

Training in the competition area is prohibited. More detailed information may be found from the map register of Finnish Orienteering Federation.

Competition Terrain

The competition terrain is largely runnable woodland, with an extensive network of recreation routes and paths. Overall visibility and runnability are very good. Of course, some areas of dense trees or thicket may be encountered locally as well. Height differences are mild. Access to some areas is restricted because of artificial ground water winning. Of these Out-Of-Bounds areas, separate instructions and photographs can be found in the competition instructions.

Training

In preparation for the 39th Youth Jukola, training legs are on offer, that have been opened in autumn 2023. These can be obtained for € 5,- /map. More precise information is advertised on the competition website.

Arrival instructions

The competition center will be located on the Alastaro Circuit motor racing track. Detailed travel directions can be found on the Youth Jukola website.

Signage will be in place from Friday 16/8/2024 16:00. Directions given by the organizers must be followed.

Parking

Parking will be at the competition center and in its direct surroundings.

Event Arena

The event arena (competition center) consists mainly of asphalted racing circuit pit-stop area, and of woodland and sandy terrain. Changing and showering are at the competition center. Showering under field circumstances.

Club tents

Club tents can be set up at the event arena on Friday 16/8/2024 from 18:00 onwards.  A tent must be set up in its designated space, which is to be reserved on the online registration portal. The size of a tent place is 5 x 6 m and the reservation fee is € 12.

Info

The info desk at the competition center is open on 16.8.2024 17–21 as well as on the event day itself from 8:00 onwards.

Accommodation

Accommodation possibilities in the surroundings are updated on the competition website in the course of spring. It is prohibited to stay overnight at the competition center.

Catering

There is a restaurant at the competition center. A meal will cost € 12 when bought on the spot or € 10 in advance from the registration system. All food is lactose free. Milk free and gluten free meals are available upon request.

In addition to the restaurant, a cafe and a sausage kiosk can be found at the event arena.
