Terlaner in Youth Jukola as the first Italian team

The first foreign team to registrate this yeast Youth Jukola was Italian Terlaner Orientierungläufer. They ar now coming to Youth Jukola for the very first time. They are also the first Italian team in Youth Jukola ever.

Because this is the their first time, the main goal is to get experience. They will be happy, when manage to finish without big problems.  The aim of the trip to Finland is to build and unite the group of young orienteers. And to have fun, too! With a perspective to future.

The seven members of the team are already chose. Still, they are not the only ones coming to Finland. Altogether 32 people will come, because also many parents and youngsters want to know more about orienteering.

The Terlaner group will arrive already one week before the relay itself. They will have a training camp in Jämi, which is situated about 25 km from Kankaanpää and hosted the adult Jukola ten years ago. The terrains in Jämi area are not exactly the same kind of than the competition terrain of Youth Jukola, but it is still more similar than the ones of Northern Italy.

The leader of the Italian group is Mikhail Mamleev, who has earlier been practicing orienteering also in Finland on high level. He tells that orienteering is not a big sport in Italy yet. The number of active orienteers is about 2000. The WOC this year is held in Italy, so orienteering will get some more publicity, but still mostly in regional media.

Terlaner Orientierungsläufer is relatively big orienteering club in Italy. It has about 80 orienteers. The club has a German name, because they come from the German-speaking South Tyrol area (in German Südtirol and in Italian Alto Adige). Terlan is not very big town. It has about 4000 inhabitants.
