A record high number of teams will be competing in Valio-Jukola 2012 in Hakunila, Vantaa on 16-17 June. A total of 1245 women’s relay teams have registered to compete in the Venla race and 1654 in men’s Jukola. The 16558 orienteerers registered to date makes Valio-Jukola 2012 the largest sports event of the year in Finland. It is also the largest Jukola relay of all time after now beating the current record high of 15 300 competitors recorded at Kytäjä, Hyvinkää two years back.
“Valio-Jukola taking place in the metropolitan area of Helsinki is a key factor contributing to this year’s surge in numbers. Long term aim of many of the teams to take part in Jukola is being realised this year. Good location has attracted in particular many new friends and work teams to come along. Increasing popularity of the sport is well evidenced also at the local level orienteering events”, says Päivi Luoma, the Executive Secretary of Valio-Jukola.
Valio-Jukola is an international orienteering event with teams from 23 countries taking part. The majority of orienteerers (ca. 75 %) are from Finland, many teams come also from Sweden and Norway.
“We are thrilled to be welcoming the competitors to Valio-Jukola. The increasingly exciting atmosphere continues to build right up to the firing of the start signal. This year we are also expecting a record number of spectators to be coming along to cheer the top competitors and orienteering enthusiasts”, Luoma adds.
Registrations to Valio-Jukola are open until 8 June. If you would like to take part but are missing a team (or part of), visit our ‘orienteerers’bank’ at /kilpailuinfo/suunnistajapankki/
