1204 Venla teams charged into the Sipoonkorva forest from the Hakunila sports grounds in a swarming heat. The start was the first of its kind as the maps were handed out directly to the first leg runners in the start area. This proved to be a best choice to the tight start space as it worked like a dream technically.
The first in the change area from the slightly over 5 kilometer track was Merja Rantanen from Jämsän Retki-Veikot, Finland with over a minute lead to Fro IK from Norway and Kangasniemen Kalske from Finland in the third place.
