Special instructions for the start

Instructions for moving to the Start

This year the distance from the warm-up area to the starting lines is long (400-900m) and the route is narrow (width is about 7 meters). The start area is also long (map lines take almost 400m).

Therefore, move to Emit-in well in advance! The Emit-in opens 75 minutes before start, i.e. at 12:45 for Venla runners and at 21:45 for Jukola runners. Drinking water, toilets and shadowy forest are available in the warm-up area.

As the way to start is long and narrow, we use a stepped “Start Gate” from the warm-up area to the start area. The Start Gate is located in the start area side (on the Northern side) of the warm-up area.

First, the teams with largest numbers are directed from the Start Gate to their own start position 40 min before the start. The stepping is guided with announcements. Listen and follow the instructions!

For the Venlas we first announce those whose team number is greater than 1,700 to move from Start Gate towards the start area. After a minute, numbers greater 1600 are announced. Similarily, a new batch of hundred starters are guided through the Start Gate every minute until numbers 1-100 are directed towards start area:

Number                              Start Gate pass

1701 – 1800                       13:20

1601 – 1700                        13:21

1501 – 1600                        13:22

1401 – 1500                        13:23

1301 – 1400                        13:24

1201 – 1300                        13:25

1101 – 1200                        13:26

1001 – 1100                        13:27

901 – 1000                         13:28

801 – 900                           13:29

701 – 800                           13:30

601 – 700                           13:31

501 – 600                           13:32

101 – 200                           13:36

1 – 100                                13:37

The Start Gate closes at 13.45, after which you can no longer move to the start area! Delayed starters get their map from the HELPPI point after the start when the DNS maps arrive (the delay is about 10 min).

For the Jukola runners we first announce those whose team number is greater than 1,900 to move from Start Gate towards the start area. After a minute, numbers greater 1800 are announced. Similarly, a new batch of hundred starters are guided through the Start Gate every minute until numbers 1-100 are directed towards start area:

101 – 200                            22:38

1 – 100                                 22:39

The Start Gate closes at 22.45 after which you can no longer move to the start area! Delayed starters get their map from the HELPPI point after the start when the DNS maps arrive (the delay is about 10 min).

If you are late for your own Start Gate time, you are still allowed to move forward to the start area, if the Start Gate is still open. Rushing to the start area too early is not recommended, so do your warm up in the warm-up area.

When you arrive at the start area, move to the right side of the starting lines on the “officials’ path” along which you can walk to your starting line. This path crosses the road and the starting lines after 1600 teams and continues on the left side.

Each beginning of a 100 team group is marked with 1, 101, 201, 301, … , 2001 on the poles. Furthermore, the map distributor officials have a number plate on their chest that says 1-20, 21-40, 41-60, …, 1981-2000.

For example, if your number is 471, go up to 401 on the pole and you will see an official with 461-480 on his/her chest.

Officials will first guide you away from the “officials’ path” to the safety gap behind your starting line, which is 5 or 10 meters long and the entire road wide.

Warm up in the start area is possible:

  • in the safety gaps
  • on the road section on front of the start lines (teams 1-700)
  • on the expansion of the “officials’ path” before the path crosses the road (teams 701-1600)
  • and on the last section of the “officials’ path” (teams 1601-2000).

You will be guided by announcement to your exact start position 8 minutes before the start. The officials will ensure that you are in the right position. Distribution of the maps starts 3 minutes before start. The map distributor will give you a map matching to your competition number. Make sure your competition number and map number are the same. Ultimately, you as the orienteerer, are responsible that you have the right map.

The map SHALL NOT be opened before the starting shot is fired. The start signal is given by the Finnish Defense Forces.
