Jukola Relay as Part of Kotka’s Sports and Physical Activity History

One of the largest events in the history of the City of Kotka is the Jukola Relay taking over the northern Kotka terrains in June. The number of teams and orienteers already registered suggests that participation figures will reach record levels compared to recent Jukola events. The appeal of both Kotka and Jukola looks excellent as summer approaches.

Versatile Use of Sports Facilities and a Joint Effort

From the perspective of the city’s sports administration, Jukola can also be seen as a fine example of the versatile use of sports facilities. An area that is normally used by several different motorsport clubs transforms into the Jukola competition and accommodation centre together with the adjacent airfield area through a massive temporary construction operation and with the help of volunteer club members and other talkoo workers.

It is also rewarding to observe the smooth cooperation between the orienteering clubs bearing the main responsibility for the arrangements – Vehkalahden Veikot and Kymin Suunnistajat – together with numerous other sports clubs from Kotka and the surrounding region, representing a wide range of disciplines. In the face of such a major effort, the need and willingness to cooperate clearly increase, and hopefully this will leave positive operational models that can be utilised even after the event for the future benefit of sports and physical activity in Kotka.

Welcome to Maritime and Forested Kotka

The City of Kotka Sports Services wishes success and strength in organising the Jukola Relay and warmly welcomes the tens of thousands of orienteers and spectators to maritime and forested Kotka!
