A responsible major event at the heart of nature and people

Kotka‑Jukola 2026 will be implemented in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

Sustainability is a cross‑cutting theme in all our activities – from planning to the event days and post‑event operations. Our goal is to organize the world’s largest orienteering event in a way that respects nature, supports the local community and offers everyone a safe, inclusive and memorable event experience. Our work is guided by the following values: environmental responsibility, local engagement, fairness, circular economy and hospitality.

Five focus areas of sustainability

Local impact

Kotka‑Jukola brings thousands of visitors to the region from Finland and abroad. The event:

Supports local businesses and services
Increases tourism and visibility in the region
Strengthens the image of Kotka and the Kymenlaakso region as a city of nature and sport
Creates a sense of community and pride among local stakeholders

Communication and transparency

Our sustainability work is communicated openly and concretely:

On the Kotka‑Jukola website and social media channels
Through signage and information points at the event area
Via volunteers and partners
After the event, successes and areas for development are evaluated for future Jukola events.

Collaboration and commitments

Sustainability work is carried out in close cooperation:

with local stakeholders and authorities
in accordance with the principles of the Ekokompassi programme

Sustainability is a shared responsibility – every volunteer, partner and participant is part of a sustainable and responsible Kotka‑Jukola.

Environmental responsibility

Kotka‑Jukola aims to minimize the environmental impact of the event and to act with respect for biodiversity.

Our key actions:

Waste sorting and recycling throughout the entire event area
Reducing single‑use plastics and increasing the use of reusable materials
Renting and reusing materials whenever possible
Prioritizing local service providers and suppliers
Promoting sustainable mobility: public transport, carpooling and clear arrival instructions

The goal is to reduce the event’s carbon footprint and to continuously develop more environmentally friendly practices.

Social responsibility

Kotka‑Jukola is above all an event for people. We want to ensure that everyone – competitors, volunteers and spectators – feels welcome and safe.
